Antisocial: An experiment without social media

Image
As technology evolved over the years, the ability to communicate and share our lives online became common, essential even. Nowadays, we carry some of the most important aspects of our lives in our pockets and most people would be horrified at the prospect of being a day (maybe even hours) without their phones. Some can admit social media is like an addiction to them, but most people I know (myself included) would disagree. I always thought I didn’t really need socials in my day-to-day, I only have them because I like taking pictures, checking up on my friends’ lives and that’s basically it. But lately I’ve been wondering what it would be like to not have social media at all. Would it make me more active? More depressed? That’s where the idea for an experiment came along. I decided I was going to delete all my social media from my phone for 7 days and record my thoughts and feelings about it. Are you ready?   Day 1 – No more procrastinating? I think my relationship...

Pre-Quarantine Thoughts?

Image
“...It’s hard writing something like this again, but it seems that the world is going backwards. When the threat of this virus was taken a bit more seriously, we all went into lockdown. When summertime came, everything seemed better, promising. However, that hope was short lived. I don’t know if the government is to blame, if society as a whole is to blame, or if it is everyone’s fault, but more and more cases appeared here and the daily death rate has been on an all-time high. The government doesn’t want to shut everything down again. They say our economy can’t take it. Instead they impose measures that make no sense and that hurt small businesses... I don’t get it. The way things are going, I can imagine being home again, doing almost nothing, missing everyone I care about. I’m scared for my parents, I’m scared of losing the job I got in the summer and that I love, I’m scared of being away from my loved ones again. I’m just scared, and sad and angry...”     This ...

The “Postpone Syndrome”

Image
I have a problem. Well, I have many problems but this one is super annoying. I tend to postpone stupid little things to a point where I probably won’t be able to do them anymore. I also postpone important things. I postpone important emails; I ignore some important deadlines... It’s so stupid. In other words, I procrastinate like a boss. The worst part is that I think of those things I need to do every single day. But I just don’t do them. What is this? Why is my brain like this? I guess this is a pretty common Portuguese problem, I mean, we are known for leaving everything undone until the last second, but it sucks so bad! Why can’t I learn? I was seriously going writing something completely different today, but guess what... I got myself into a shitty situation because I was stupid enough to postpone a simple email. I’m an idiot. At this point I usually say that “I need a therapist” but at this point I don’t even know what I need. I need a reset button. One that works, speci...

Addicted to Food?

Image
I want to start by saying that I’m not a professional of any kind when it comes to this subject. I’m merely putting out my thoughts and feelings. If you are dealing with any mental/physical problems regarding food/eating, or of any kind, please seek out professional help. The other day I was watching a lady talk about the dangers of vaping and then she went on talking about addiction. When she was defining “addiction” it really caught my attention. I tried searching for that specific definition and this is the closest I could find. According to Medical News Today , addiction is a psychological and physical inability to stop consuming a chemical, drug, activity or substance even though it is causing psychological and physical harm . Am I addicted to eating? Well, now I’m controlling and restricting myself a bit, but when I wasn’t, I would just eat constantly, fully aware of what it was doing to my body (on the inside and on the outside). And I wouldn’t be satisfied with just anyth...

Relax, refresh and restart.

Image
To everyone who's been coming arround lately, thank you. You've been giving a lot of meaning to my life in these troubled times and the only things I can do (for now) to give something back to you, is to keep on improving the content I put out. That's why, for the next days, I'll be away, to refresh and reboot this little noggin! I'll be back next week, ready to impress and give you more things to hopefully get your mind out of things for a while. I already have some ideas and I can't wait to try them out! I won't be far, I won't be long and I'll be okay. And I hope you guys are okay too and making sure you're being kind to yourselves and taking care of yourselves as well. If you're anything like me and you feel your brain getting tired, the eyes hurting or those migraines coming in, just take a break. Take as much time as you need. These are changing times and we need to adjust to them, yes, but we also need to respect out boundries and...

Quarantine Thoughts - Day 4

Image
In order to maintain some sort sanity, an important aspect of quarantine is keeping a routine . If you’re one of those people at home with “nothing to do” it can be easy to fall into that bed-couch-bed pattern, with some food brakes in between, which is not healthy for your mind nor your body and eventually you’ll end up feeling bored and frustrated. A planner can be a great ally for this. At the moment, I’m writing in my planner things like “Have breakfast”, “Brush teeth”, “Take a shower”, “Tidy up bedroom”. It might seem silly but since we are at home it’s easy to sometimes let go of those little things we do every day to take care of ourselves, so the planner is always there to keep you accountable . And the act of ticking every single one of your plans for the day, no matter how silly or simple they sound, we’ll give you a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. You won’t have the feeling of “I did nothing today”. Don’t get me wrong, doing nothing is absolutely neces...

Starting Over

Image
I’m in a not so good phase of my life. I’m lacking motivation, I’m anxious, uninspired and to top it all off, I gained almost all the weight that I had lost. I also feel like I have no one to talk to, since I don’t know anyone going through anything similar. I just feel like whenever I try to explain it, no one really gets it. I don’t see any progress in my life. However, something deep down pushed me to try and find some motivation or inspiration today. I read somewhere that people like me often don’t do certain things just because we don’t “feel like it”. But not feeling like doing something doesn’t actually stop us from doing it. As much as I don’t “feel like” getting up in the morning, there’s no invisible force keeping me tied up to the bed. Whatever we feel about the things we have to do doesn’t have any impact on the ability of doing them. Or, at least, that’s how it should be. I want to try and be more conscious and not let feelings control what happens in my day to d...

My Weight Loss Journey: One Month

Image
Here we are, one month after the start of my journey and I have lot to tell you! Starting with my physical progress , I’ve lost 16.5 lbs in total, ~ 4 inches in my chest, waist and hips, and ~ 6 inches in my stomach. It’s amazing and I need to add that, so far, I haven’t done any exercise at all. But I will! I am nowhere near my goal weight but I have to say that I feel amazing ! I’ve always heard that it takes 21 days to make a habit out of something, but I’ve never had the will to keep up good, healthy habits for so long, until now. Because I can’t eat my feelings now, I had to learn how to deal with them, so I feel more emotionally stable .   This might be a bit tmi (too much information) but I think that it is very important: I used to have a lot of gas and horrible gas pains for so long that I got used to them, and I thought that I would always have to live with them. After completely cutting sugar off my diet it was all gone! No more pain, no more being unco...

Heart to Heart: Blocked by Stress

Image
Sometimes in my life, everything is going well and I’m doing what I want to do, I’m sticking to my plans and my schedules… But then, something happens, or if something new is coming up I start to feel drained. It’s more than the thoughts that make me nervous (as I mentioned here ), it’s physical. I want to sleep more, I want to do less, I postpone everything I can. Sometimes, I’m even annoyed just by talking! I don’t even know how I’m writing this  right now because I really just want to curl up in bed and stay there. I always thought that I was lazy (and I am) but now that I’m analyzing myself more I feel like there’s more to it. Am I ok?
